Things For Sale at the Chalabre Vide Grenier

Vide Greniers in French means something like attic sale. They are like a Garage Sale but they are held somewhere public and a whole bunch of folks get together and sell all their old crap. The difference is what we and what the French call old crap. I thought you might enjoy the kinds of things people have for sale. Like an American Garage Sale, there seem to be very few screaming bargains but the stuff does seem to have a cachet that is somewhat above the "Made in China" plastic junk you see in the States. And of course there are the vendors who mistake a vide grenier for a public market and bring vegetables to sell. So, click to enlarge and enjoy, especially the face of the doll.

That baby doll looks like it's been the victim of "severe doll abuse"...but the copper pots are lovely...someone must have given up cooking...is that legal in France?

Luke wishes you a happy Bastille Day! I hope there is partying going on!

On my first trip to France in 1968 We bought a set of copper pots just like those in your photo. After 40 some years of use I am in the process of having them retinned. It's costing more to have them retinned than I ever paid for them in the first place....one a month; 5 down and 4 to go. Ron would love that record of Edith Piaf. He loves her sound. Judy

Actually, I think the doll looks very well loved. In our experience (family of three girls), the best loved dolls were usually the scariest looking! "Baby Kate" had a severe mouth disfigurement because she was left outside in the rain and one of the dogs chewed her face. She didn't lose favor with Ellen who loved Baby Kate. It only made Baby Kate easier to feed. She ate a lot of whoppers that way...Peggy

Those copper pots do look pretty cool. I would also have gone through the vinyl albums. Edith Piaf was our background on Sunday evening's Bastille Day party here in Arizona (it was already the 14th in France). We celebrated the end of the monarchy by eating and drinking too much.
