There are lots of blogs out there about Americans in France. Here's one I found with a interesting post on some of the differences between France and the U.S.

The two blogs that discussed the cultural differences in smiling between the US and France were very interesting. In my own experience, I found the inhabitants of the south of France to be much more open to smiles and basic friendliness than those in the north. Perhaps we could extrapolate that to all of Europe, observing that those around the Mediterranean tend to be more amiable and more responsive to American smiles. Does it have anything to do with the wonderful light and bright sunshine of the south?
Harvey, I agree that they tend to smile a lot more in the south of France. Especially in the villages.
