Regardless, enjoy your special day!Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5425550699774238271.post-27542653150264369932008-10-13T17:19:00.000-06:002008-10-13T17:19:00.000-06:00Sixty and still ticking, not bad. Congratulations...Sixty and still ticking, not bad. Congratulations on arriving at sixty with such panache.

We had such a wonderful childhood, incredibly privileged and happy. I remember the vastness of the basement prairie where we rode our horses on the arms of the couch. And Alma, I learned to iron a shirt properly from her. I also told her a dirty joke about a black woman that I didn't understand. Some friends of mom and dad were visiting with their son, who we didn't know. He told me the joke and I repeated it. Alma told me that was not a nice story and not to tell it again. It was years later when I realized what I had said to our dear friend.

Your reflection of your life is interesting, you have such a global view of things. I think we all have always admired both you and Nancy for all your adventures and accomplishments and all the wonderful memories you have given our families. You have both given us all so much. I concur with my sisters, Nancy is a peach and we are all lucky to have her as family.

Keep on keeping on, Happy Birthday and we love you. Love, LeslieAnonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5425550699774238271.post-87451907773897904582008-10-13T13:15:00.000-06:002008-10-13T13:15:00.000-06:00Doug - I remember taking a strenuous hike up Arapa...Doug - I remember taking a strenuous hike up Arapahoe Peak with you in the 70's and I was thinking, or maybe you said, "I need to find a girlfriend that likes to do this stuff." Well, you found one that liked to do this stuff and more. You and Nancy found your match in each other. I always marvel at how two people find each other. There is a lot of luck involved at first but after that a lot of character, flexibility and selflessness. I agree with Amy that Nancy has a special place in our family. Doug and Nancy enrich our lives.

Doug, I loved your memories of Alma because I, too, loved her dearly. Wednesday was my favorite day of the week and I would wait for her at the back gate because she would arrive promptly at 8:00 a.m. I was convinced that I was her favorite (not true, she loved us all) because she made me feel that way. I have to share a funny Alma/Amy story that doesn't really relate to turning 60. I guess Alma had missed her bus and Clarence, her husband, came to pick her up after work. Amy was looking out the window and when she saw Clarence in the car said with surprise and delight, "Hey, they match!"

Anyway, Doug Reid, 60! Frankly I can't believe it. But we are living at a good time in which we can be healthy enough at 60 to take advantage of the wisdom we've gained. Mind and body can travel the road. Carry on Doug (and Nancy). I can't wait to see what you'll do in the next ten years!
love, PeggyAnonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5425550699774238271.post-10404725492141431982008-10-13T08:30:00.000-06:002008-10-13T08:30:00.000-06:00I agree with Amy...you are a wonderful and witty w...I agree with Amy...you are a wonderful and witty writer. Like I've saying since I started reading your blog from Leran, you should write a humorous commentary on your adventures in France.

The Americans and the French have so many cultural differences...but on an individual human level, we are so much alike. What divides us is so much less than what brings us together. Nancy's pictures of all the "gatherings" of people...out on the street, in your favorite bar or out in the countryside show what a great adventure you've been having...and a book about that would be wonderful.

I'm glad to see Nancy acknowledged as the "life changer" she is...even back in high school she was our "leader"...I probably should have followed more closely...but we all have our own paths to follow and navigate. Nancy was spoken of with admiration and fond remembrance at our class reunion last month...we did miss you Procter Baby!

I've only met you once in person on a long-ago visit to Montana in1979(?) Doug, but I feel like we have gotten to be friends through your blog and because we are both very fond of your wife. You have made my life far more interesting through your writing and Nancy's pictures from France and here at home...so thank you for letting me share your life...although vicariously.

I want to end with salutations on your 60th year! Happy Birthday! And may there be many more birthdays to celebrate!

LukeAnonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5425550699774238271.post-88840030670171166752008-10-12T19:51:00.000-06:002008-10-12T19:51:00.000-06:00Oh so well said. (That is to be said in a Scottish accent.)
I must comment on a few things; firstly and most importantly...Nancy Procter is the best thing that ever happened to you and she is even one of the best things to happen to our family. I feel so lucky to consider the both of you some of my best friends and favorite people.
Number 2: Alma's family was from Lake Charles, Lousiana. What a kind and gentle lady she was, I often think how she would let me talk and talk and talk and she would just listen, as if I was the most important 8 year old on earth. It is for people like her (and ourselves for that matter)that we need to make sure Obama wins. I don't even mean this in a racially oriented way. I mean this for all civil people who care about other humans.
And finally, I so appreciate your reflections on being 60, I still maintain that the one career you have left to pursue is as a writer. Your thoughts are so well expressed and I think, interesting to more than just me. There is a universal sort of feeling that you capture as you write and it is beautiful to read.
Happy Birthday Brother.
I love you.
AmyAnonymousnoreply@blogger.com
